WHITE CHRISTMAS

Wednesday, December 2nd at 7:00pm

To be honest, it couldn’t go wrong. The darling of musical cinema Irving Berlin plus Bing Crosby, the housewife’s favourite big-eyed boy? A match made in heaven. The big surprise is – it’s even better than it promised to be. This eagerly awaited musical is essentially a buddy film. Well sort of, it’s certainly got two buddies in it, but it’s also a love story, a Christmas fable, and a vehicle to hang some exceptionally catchy hits on. Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Paris (Danny Kaye) meet during the Second World War and become firm friends. After getting demobilized they team up to become hot property as a song and dance duo ripping up the nightspots with their own brand of feel-good hits. After five years of rolling success they need a holiday and cruise off to a New England skiing resort in the company of two comely sisters, Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Vera (Vera-Ellen). They arrive to find the place nearly bankrupt, as there has been no snow for over a year. The local top man is their old army boss General Waverly (Dean Jagger), and sure enough our two heroes wade in to help their old comrade and organise a benefit concert. But can they save the resort?

EXPERIMENTER

Sunday, December 6th at 3pm

Yale University, 1961. Stanley Milgram (Peter Sarsgaard) designs a psychology experiment that remains relevant to this day, in which people think they’re delivering painful electric shocks to an affable stranger (Jim Gaffigan) strapped into a chair in another room. Disregarding his pleas for mercy, the majority of subjects do not stop the experiment, administering what they think are near-fatal electric shocks, simply because they’ve been told to. With Nazi Adolf Eichmann’s trial airing in living rooms across America, Milgram’s exploration of authority and conformity strikes a nerve in popular culture and the scientific community. Celebrated in some circles, he is also accused of being a deceptive, manipulative monster. His wife Sasha (Winona Ryder) anchors him through it all. EXPERIMENTER invites us inside Milgram’s whirring mind in this bracing portrait of a brilliant man whose conscience and creative spirit continue to be resonant, poignant, and inspirational.

JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE

Wednesday, December 9th at 7pm

Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic rock & roll singers of all time, a tragic and misunderstood figure who thrilled millions of listeners and blazed new creative trails before her death in 1970 at age 27. With JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE, Oscar-nominated director Amy Berg (DELIVER US FROM EVIL, WEST OF MEMPHIS) examines Joplin’s story in depth for the first time on film, presenting an intimate and insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, often beleaguered artist. Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote to her parents over the years, many of them made public here for the first time (and read by Southern-born indie rock star/actor Chan Marshall, also known as Cat Power). Joplin was a powerhouse when she sang, and her recordings have never left the radio or the hearts of rock fans worldwide. Berg’s JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE offers new understanding of a bright, complex woman whose surprising rise and sudden demise changed music forever.
